Treacle scones are a traditional British teatime treat, often enjoyed with clotted cream and jam.

  1. Preheat the oven to 220°C (425°F).
  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
  4. Stir in the treacle.
  5. Gradually add the milk and mix until a soft dough forms.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead lightly.
  7. Roll out the dough to about 2cm (3/4 inch) thickness.
  8. Cut out rounds using a floured cutter.
  9. Place the scones on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
  10. Beat the egg and brush it over the tops of the scones.
  11. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
  12. Allow the scones to cool on a wire rack before serving.
