  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch (23cm) baking dish.
  2. In a small saucepan, combine the dried figs and enough water to cover them. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Drain and chop the figs.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Mix in the chopped figs, milk, vanilla extract, and brandy or rum.
  4. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish. Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  5. Remove from the oven and let the pudding rest for 30 minutes before serving.
  6. Serve warm with whipped cream on top.
