In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.

Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

In a separate bowl, beat the egg, milk, and vanilla extract together.

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined.

Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for about 1 minute.

Roll out the dough to about 1/2-inch thickness.

Cut out rounds using a biscuit cutter and place them on a baking sheet.

Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.

Allow the shortcakes to cool completely.

Slice the strawberries and set aside.

To assemble, split each shortcake in half horizontally.

Place a spoonful of sliced strawberries on the bottom half of each shortcake.
