Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a baking dish.

In a bowl, combine the chopped dates and boiling water. Stir in the baking soda and let it sit for 10 minutes.

In a separate bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.

Gradually add the flour and baking powder to the butter mixture, alternating with the date mixture. Stir in the vanilla extract.

Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

While the pudding is baking, prepare the toffee sauce by heating it in a saucepan over low heat until warm.
