  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch square baking pan.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg, then stir in the molasses.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture, alternating with the hot water. Mix well.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
