  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. Peel and slice the pears. In a small saucepan, melt 4 tablespoons of butter. Stir in the brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. Cook until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture is bubbly. Pour the mixture into the prepared cake pan.
  3. Arrange the pear slices on top of the sugar mixture in the pan.
  4. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. In a separate bowl, cream together the remaining butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.
  6. Gradually add the flour mixture to the creamed butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Begin and end with the flour mixture.
  7. Pour the batter over the pears in the cake pan.
  8. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
  9. Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes.
  10. Place a serving plate on top of the cake pan and carefully invert the cake onto the plate. Remove the pan.
