  1. In a large bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes.
  2. Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise for 1 hour.
  5. Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).
  6. In a large pot, bring water and baking soda to a boil.
  7. Divide the dough into 6 equal pieces and roll each piece into a rope.
  8. Shape each rope into a pretzel shape.
  9. Carefully place the pretzels into the boiling water for 30 seconds.
  10. Remove the pretzels from the water and place them on a greased baking sheet.
  11. Sprinkle coarse salt on top of each pretzel.
  12. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.
  13. Let the pretzels cool for a few minutes before serving.
