Brownies were invented in the United States and have been a popular dessert since the late 19th century. They are often served with a dusting of powdered sugar or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and grease a square baking dish.
  2. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Remove from heat and stir in the sugar until well combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs and vanilla extract together. Gradually add the egg mixture to the melted butter and sugar mixture, stirring until well combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, stirring until just combined.
  5. Fold in the chocolate chips and chopped nuts, if desired.
  6. Pour the batter into the greased baking dish and spread evenly.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few crumbs.
  8. Remove from the oven and let cool in the baking dish for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Cut into squares and serve.
