  3. Peel and thinly slice the potatoes.

  6. Gradually whisk in the milk and cook until the mixture thickens.
  7. Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the cheddar cheese until melted.
  8. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish.
  9. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes.
  10. Repeat with the remaining potatoes and cheese sauce.
  11. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  12. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
  13. Let the dish rest for 10 minutes before serving.
