  2. Peel and thinly slice the potatoes and onions.
  3. Melt the butter in a large frying pan over medium heat.
  4. Add a layer of potatoes to cover the bottom of the pan.
  5. Top with a layer of onions and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  6. Repeat the layers until all the potatoes and onions are used.
  7. Pour any remaining butter over the top layer.
  8. Cover the pan with a lid or foil and cook on low heat for 20 minutes.
  9. Remove the lid or foil and sprinkle grated cheddar cheese over the top.
  10. Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and golden.
  11. Remove from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes before serving.
