Onion tarts have been enjoyed in France since the Middle Ages and are a popular dish in French cuisine.

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Roll out the pie crust and place it in a tart pan.
  3. In a pan, melt the butter and sauté the onions until caramelized.
  4. In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, and black pepper.
  5. Spread the caramelized onions on the pie crust and pour the egg mixture over them.
  6. Sprinkle grated Gruyere cheese on top.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes or until the tart is golden brown.
  8. Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.
