Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a loaf pan.

In a small bowl, combine the dates and boiling water. Let stand for 10 minutes.

In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, mixing well after each addition.

Drain the dates and stir them into the batter along with the chopped walnuts.

Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top.

Bake for 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Remove from the oven and let cool in the pan for 15 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
