  1. Heat butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add chopped onion and minced garlic, sauté until translucent.
  2. Add sliced mushrooms and cook until they release their moisture.
  3. Sprinkle flour over the mushrooms and stir well to coat.
  4. Slowly pour in vegetable broth while stirring continuously.
  5. Add thyme, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes.
  6. Stir in milk and simmer for an additional 5 minutes.
  7. Remove from heat and let it rest for 5 minutes.
  8. Use an immersion blender or a regular blender to puree the soup until smooth.
  9. Serve hot and garnish with fresh thyme leaves, if desired.
