Malasadas are a popular Portuguese dessert that were brought to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants and are now a staple in Hawaiian cuisine.

In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.

In a saucepan, heat the milk and butter until the butter melts. Remove from heat.

Add the milk mixture and egg to the dry ingredients. Mix until a sticky dough forms.

Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 minutes.

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rest for 30 minutes.

Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).

Divide the dough into 6 equal portions and shape them into balls.

Carefully drop the dough balls into the hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side.

Remove the malasadas from the oil and drain on paper towels.

Dust the malasadas with powdered sugar before serving.
