Lemon Poppy Seed Cake
Poppy seeds are derived from the opium poppy plant, but the seeds themselves do not contain any narcotic properties.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the lemon zest and lemon juice.

Beat in the flour mixture alternately with the milk, mixing just until incorporated. Stir in the poppy seeds.

Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.

Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then remove from the pan and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
