The first chocolate chip cookie was created by Ruth Graves Wakefield in 1938 when she added chopped up bits from a Nestlé semi-sweet chocolate bar into a cookie recipe.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).

In a large bowl, cream together the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.

Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.

Stir in the rolled oats, rice cereal, chocolate chips, and chopped nuts.

Drop spoonfuls of the dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown around the edges.

Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes.

Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
