Chocolate chip cookies were invented by Ruth Graves Wakefield in 1938 at the Toll House Inn in Massachusetts. She added chopped up chocolate to her cookie dough, expecting it to melt and create chocolate cookies. Instead, the chocolate chips held their shape, and the chocolate chip cookie was born!

  3. In a separate large bowl, cream together the softened butter, coconut sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  6. Stir in the dark chocolate chips and chopped nuts (if using).
  7. Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  8. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown.
  9. Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes.
