  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a baking pan.
  2. In a heatproof bowl, melt the butter and dark chocolate together over a pan of simmering water.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. Gradually add the melted chocolate mixture to the egg mixture, stirring constantly.
  5. Sift in the flour, cocoa powder, and salt, and fold until just combined.
  6. If desired, stir in the walnuts.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the top.
  8. Bake for 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  9. Remove from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes.
  10. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before cutting into squares.
  11. Serve and enjoy!
