Grandma’s Cocoa Meringue Pie

Preheat the oven to 350°F.

In a medium bowl, combine the pie crust, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, cocoa powder, flour, and salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Press the mixture into the bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch pie dish. Bake for 8 minutes.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and milk. Pour the mixture into the partially baked pie crust.

In a clean mixing bowl, beat the egg whites and cream of tartar until soft peaks form. Gradually add 1/2 cup granulated sugar, beating until stiff peaks form.

Spread the meringue over the pie filling, sealing it to the edges of the crust.

Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the meringue is golden brown.

Allow the pie to cool for 1 hour before serving.
