Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and salt. Set aside.

In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg, molasses, and vanilla extract.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined.

Roll the dough into 1-inch balls, then roll each ball in the granulated sugar to coat.

Place the coated balls onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, spacing them about 2 inches apart.

Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are set but the centers are still soft.

Remove from the oven and let the cookies rest on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
