Gingerbread for Houses
Gingerbread houses originated in Germany during the 16th century and were popularized by the Brothers Grimm fairytale, Hansel and Gretel.
This is vegetarian recipe. Dish can be prepared in 110 minutes. Recipe requires some culinary experience (medium difficulty). Number of ingredients: 12.

In a bowl, whisk together the flour, ginger, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt.

In a separate bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.

Beat in the molasses and egg until well combined.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until a dough forms.

Divide the dough into two equal portions, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.

Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick.

Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes for the gingerbread houses.

Transfer the cut-out dough to the prepared baking sheets and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until lightly golden brown.

Allow the gingerbread pieces to cool completely on wire racks.

In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and water to make a thick icing.

Use the icing to assemble the gingerbread houses and decorate with assorted candies and decorations.

Let the icing set and the gingerbread houses rest for at least 1 hour before serving.
