Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

Cut the cold butter into small cubes and add it to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Stir in the sugar, grated ginger, and orange zest.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg and milk. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it gently a few times to bring it together.

Pat the dough into a circle about 1 inch (5 cm) thick. Cut the circle into 8 wedges.

Place the scones on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
