Chocolate chip cookies were invented by Ruth Graves Wakefield in the 1930s. She added chopped chocolate to her cookie dough, expecting it to melt and create chocolate cookies. Instead, the chocolate pieces held their shape, and thus the chocolate chip cookie was born.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, mix the melted butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until well combined.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Fold in the chocolate chips.
  6. Drop spoonfuls of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  7. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are set and the centers are still slightly soft.
  8. Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
