Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). In a small bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add the vanilla extract and eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture and mix well. Stir in the chocolate chips and nuts, if desired.

Drop rounded tablespoonfuls of dough onto ungreased baking sheets. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until lightly golden brown.

Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for 2 minutes, then transfer them to wire racks to cool completely.
