Rice Krispies Treats were invented in the 1930s by Malitta Jensen and were originally called ‘Marshmallow Squares’. The recipe was later published on the back of Rice Krispies cereal boxes, and they became a popular treat for kids and adults alike.

In a large saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Add the marshmallows and stir until completely melted.

Remove from heat and stir in the peanut butter, vanilla extract, and salt until well combined.

Add the Rice Krispies cereal and mix until evenly coated.

Press the mixture into a greased 9x9 inch baking dish.

In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the chocolate chips in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until smooth.

Drizzle the melted chocolate over the Rice Krispies mixture.

Allow the bars to cool and set for about 1 hour.

Cut into squares and serve.
