Date squares, also known as matrimonial cake, are a popular dessert in Canada, especially in the Maritime provinces.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a saucepan, combine the dates and 1 cup of water. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 5 minutes until the dates are soft. Remove from heat and mash the dates with a fork.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar. Add the oats, flour, baking soda, and salt. Mix until crumbly.
  4. Press half of the oat mixture into the bottom of a greased 9x9-inch baking dish. Spread the mashed dates evenly over the oat mixture. Sprinkle the remaining oat mixture on top.
  5. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown. Allow to cool before cutting into squares.
  6. Serve and enjoy!
