Date Squares
Date squares, also known as matrimonial cake, are a popular dessert in Canada, especially in the Maritime provinces.
This is vegetarian recipe. Dish can be prepared in 60 minutes. Recipe requires some culinary experience (medium difficulty). Number of ingredients: 7.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

In a saucepan, combine the dates and 1 cup of water. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 5 minutes until the dates are soft. Remove from heat and mash the dates with a fork.

In a separate bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar. Add the oats, flour, baking soda, and salt. Mix until crumbly.

Press half of the oat mixture into the bottom of a greased 9x9-inch baking dish. Spread the mashed dates evenly over the oat mixture. Sprinkle the remaining oat mixture on top.

Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown. Allow to cool before cutting into squares.
