  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).
  2. In a saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until hot but not boiling.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly.
  5. In a small bowl, dissolve the cornstarch in water and add it to the milk mixture. Stir well.
  6. Place the caramel syrup in the bottom of a baking dish.
  7. Pour the custard mixture over the caramel syrup.
  8. Place the baking dish in a larger baking pan and fill the larger pan with hot water to create a water bath.
  9. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the custard is set.
  10. Remove from the oven and let it cool for 10 minutes.
  11. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until chilled and set.
  12. To serve, invert the custard onto a serving plate, allowing the caramel syrup to drizzle over the top.
  13. Slice and enjoy!
