  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream the unsalted butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture, alternating with the milk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  6. Line a muffin tin with cupcake liners and fill each liner about two-thirds full with the batter.
  7. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean.
  8. Remove from the oven and let cool in the pan for a few minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. In the meantime, prepare the buttercream icing by creaming the unsalted butter. Gradually add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract, beating until light and fluffy. Add food coloring if desired.
  10. Once the cupcakes are completely cooled, spread or pipe the buttercream icing on top of each cupcake.
