Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
-
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon.
-
In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.

Gradually mix in the dry ingredients, alternating with the milk. Fold in the sliced apples.
-
Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

While the cake is baking, prepare the hard sauce. In a small saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Stir in the brown sugar and heavy cream. Cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens slightly. Remove from heat and stir in the powdered sugar and vanilla extract.
-
Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Serve slices of the cake with a drizzle of warm hard sauce.
