  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. Peel and core the pears, then slice them into thin wedges.
  3. In a small saucepan, melt 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter over medium heat. Add the brown sugar and stir until melted and smooth. Pour the mixture into the prepared cake pan.
  4. Arrange the pear slices in a circular pattern on top of the brown sugar mixture.
  5. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the dark chocolate and remaining 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter together, stirring until smooth.
  6. In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  7. In a large mixing bowl, beat the granulated sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract until creamy. Gradually add the melted chocolate mixture and mix well.
  8. Alternately add the flour mixture and milk to the batter, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.
  9. Pour the batter over the pears in the cake pan, spreading it evenly.
  10. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  11. Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes.
  12. Carefully invert the cake onto a serving plate and remove the pan.
  13. Allow the cake to cool completely before serving.
