Chocolate chip cookies were invented by Ruth Graves Wakefield in 1938. She added chopped up bits from a Nestlé semi-sweet chocolate bar into a cookie recipe.

  1. In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Add the egg and vanilla extract, and mix well.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until well combined.
  5. Shape the dough into a disk, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  6. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  7. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to a thickness of about 1/4 inch.
  8. Use leaf-shaped cookie cutters to cut out cookies from the dough.
  9. Place the cookies on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until set.
  10. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  11. Melt the dark chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water.
  12. Dip half of each cookie into the melted chocolate and place them back on the wire rack.
  13. Allow the chocolate to set before serving.
