The first chocolate chip cookie was invented by Ruth Graves Wakefield in 1938 when she added chopped chocolate to her cookie dough, expecting it to melt and create chocolate cookies. Instead, the chocolate pieces retained their shape, giving birth to the iconic chocolate chip cookie we know today.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.

In a large bowl, combine the melted butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar. Mix until well combined.

Add the vanilla extract, egg, and egg yolk to the butter mixture. Mix until smooth.

Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, stirring until just combined.

Fold in the chocolate chips.

Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.

Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown.

Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes.

Transfer the cookies to a wire rack to cool completely.
