Baklava is believed to have originated in the Ottoman Empire and has been enjoyed for centuries in various Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cultures.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a food processor, pulse the pecans, almonds, and walnuts until finely chopped.
  3. In a bowl, mix the chopped nuts, cocoa powder, sugar, and cinnamon.
  4. Melt the butter in a small saucepan.
  5. Brush a baking dish with melted butter.
  6. Layer 6 sheets of phyllo dough in the baking dish, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
  7. Sprinkle half of the nut mixture over the phyllo dough.
  8. Layer another 6 sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
  9. Sprinkle the remaining nut mixture over the phyllo dough.
  10. Layer the final 6 sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
  11. Cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes.
  12. Bake for 30 minutes, or until golden brown.
  13. While the baklava is baking, combine honey and water in a saucepan and bring to a boil.
  14. Reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
  15. Remove the baklava from the oven and immediately pour the honey syrup over it.
  16. Let the baklava cool and rest for at least 1 hour before serving.
