Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a cupcake pan with liners.

In a large bowl, combine the Amish Friendship Bread Starter, flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix well.

Gently fold in the chopped maraschino cherries.

Divide the batter evenly among the cupcake liners.

Bake for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Remove from the oven and let the cupcakes cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

In a separate bowl, cream together the softened butter, powdered sugar, milk, and red food coloring (if using) to make the buttercream frosting.
