  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x9-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. In a small bowl, beat the egg and almond extract. Add to the flour mixture and mix until well combined.
  4. Reserve 1 cup of the crumb mixture for the topping. Press the remaining mixture into the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
