Cheddar cheese originated in the English village of Cheddar in the 12th century.

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

Cut the cold butter into small cubes and add it to the flour mixture. Use your fingers or a pastry cutter to cut the butter into the flour until it resembles coarse crumbs.

Stir in the grated cheddar cheese.

Make a well in the center of the mixture and pour in the milk. Stir until just combined.

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it a few times to bring it together.

Divide the dough into 6 equal portions and shape each portion into a loaf.

Place the loaves onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Brush the tops of the loaves with the beaten egg.

Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the loaves are golden brown and cooked through.

Remove from the oven and let them rest for 10 minutes before serving.
