  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a round cake pan.
  2. Peel and core the pears, then slice them into thin wedges.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, ground ginger, and salt.
  4. In a separate large bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  5. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  6. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients, alternating with the milk.
  7. Spread half of the batter into the prepared cake pan.
  8. Arrange the pear slices on top of the batter.
  9. In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar and ground cinnamon. Sprinkle half of this mixture over the pears.
  10. Spread the remaining batter over the pears and sprinkle the remaining brown sugar mixture on top.
  11. Bake for 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  12. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  13. Serve slices of the caramelized pear ginger cake with whipped cream or ice cream.
