Candy Cane Cottage
The tradition of candy canes dates back to the 17th century when they were originally straight and white, representing the purity of Jesus. The red stripes and peppermint flavor were added later.

In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.

Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and peppermint extract.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.

Divide the dough in half and add red food coloring to one half, mixing until the color is evenly distributed.

Wrap both doughs in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Take a small piece of dough from each color and roll them into ropes of equal length.

Twist the ropes together and shape them into a candy cane.

Place the candy canes on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until lightly golden.

Allow the candy canes to cool completely on a wire rack.

In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and milk to make a glaze.

Dip each candy cane into the glaze, allowing any excess to drip off.

Crush the candy canes and sprinkle them over the glazed candy canes.
