Coffee cake does not actually contain coffee in its ingredients, but it is called coffee cake because it is traditionally enjoyed with a cup of coffee.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, and vanilla extract. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
  4. Spread half of the batter into the prepared cake pan. Top with half of the sliced strawberries.
  5. In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, cinnamon, and chopped walnuts. Sprinkle half of this mixture over the strawberries.
  6. Pour the remaining batter over the strawberry layer and top with the remaining sliced strawberries. Sprinkle the remaining brown sugar mixture over the strawberries.
  7. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Serve the coffee cake at room temperature.
