Banana bread became popular during the Great Depression as a way to use up overripe bananas.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x5 inch loaf pan.

In a large bowl, mash the ripe bananas with a fork.

Add the brown sugar, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract to the mashed bananas. Mix well.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the banana mixture, stirring until just combined.

Fold in the chopped walnuts.

Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top.

Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Remove from the oven and let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
