Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

In a separate bowl, beat together egg, milk, and vanilla extract. Add to the dry ingredients and mix well.

Pour half of the batter into the prepared cake pan. In a small bowl, mix together brown sugar, cinnamon, and chopped nuts (if using). Sprinkle half of this mixture over the batter in the pan. Repeat layers with remaining batter and sugar mixture.

Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
