  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract and brandy.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk. Fold in the chopped apples.
  5. In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and chopped walnuts.
  6. Pour half of the batter into the prepared cake pan. Sprinkle half of the brown sugar mixture over the batter. Pour the remaining batter over the top, and sprinkle with the remaining brown sugar mixture.
