She ran out of baker's chocolate while making cookies and substituted it with chopped up chocolate, expecting it to melt and create chocolate cookies. Instead, the chocolate pieces retained their shape, creating the first chocolate chip cookies.

Ingredients
  • 1 cup Butter
  • 1/2 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup Brown sugar
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 2 1/4 cup All-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon Baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 cup Semi-sweet chocolate chips
Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  6. Fold in the chocolate chips.
  7. Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto a baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  8. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown.
  9. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
