Banana bread became popular in the United States during the Great Depression when resourceful cooks started using overripe bananas instead of throwing them away.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x5-inch loaf pan.
  2. In a large bowl, mash the ripe bananas with a fork or potato masher.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the mashed bananas and vanilla extract.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the banana mixture, stirring until just combined. Fold in the chopped walnuts.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top with a spatula.
  6. Bake for 60-70 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Remove from the oven and let the banana bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing and serving.
