  2. Trim the ends of the asparagus and cut into 2-inch pieces.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  4. Add onion and garlic, cook until softened.
  5. Add mushrooms and cook until tender.
  6. Stir in flour, then gradually add milk and vegetable broth.
  7. Cook until the sauce thickens.
  8. Remove from heat and stir in Parmesan cheese, salt, and black pepper.
  9. In a greased casserole dish, layer half of the asparagus, then pour half of the sauce over it.
  10. Repeat with the remaining asparagus and sauce.
  11. Sprinkle bread crumbs on top.
  12. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden and bubbly.
  13. Let it rest for 5 minutes before serving.
