Cook the arepas in the skillet for about 5 minutes on each side, until golden brown.

Remove the arepas from the skillet and let them rest for 5 minutes.

Meanwhile, prepare the savory topping by combining the black beans, avocado, tomato, red onion, cilantro, lime juice, salt, and black pepper in a bowl.
