Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. Set aside.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream together butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time. Stir in molasses.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture, alternating with milk. Mix well after each addition.
  5. Divide the batter equally between the prepared pans. Smooth the tops with a spatula.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Meanwhile, peel, core, and slice the apples. Cook them in a saucepan with a little water until tender. Mash the cooked apples with a fork.
  9. Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a thin layer of mashed apples on top. Repeat with the remaining layers, ending with a layer of mashed apples.
  10. Let the cake rest for at least 1 hour before serving.
  11. Dust the top of the cake with powdered sugar before serving.
