Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and salt.

In a large bowl, cream together the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg, molasses, and vanilla extract.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.

Roll the dough into 1-inch balls. Roll each ball in granulated sugar to coat.

Place the coated dough balls onto a baking sheet, spacing them 2 inches apart.

Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are set and the tops are cracked.

Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes.
