Nutella was created during World War II when an Italian pastry maker mixed hazelnuts with cocoa to extend his chocolate supply.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x9-inch baking pan.

In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.

Press two-thirds of the dough into the bottom of the prepared baking pan.

Spread the Nutella evenly over the dough.

Crumble the remaining dough over the Nutella layer.

Sprinkle the chocolate chips on top.

Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.

Allow to cool in the pan for 30 minutes before cutting into bars.
