The chocolate chip cookie was invented by Ruth Graves Wakefield in 1938 when she decided to add chopped up semi-sweet chocolate to her cookie dough, expecting the chocolate to melt and create a chocolate cookie. Instead, the chocolate bits retained their shape, creating the first ever chocolate chip cookie.
